Sumi Saito Kimanivong

My name is Sumi Saito Kimanivong. I am a 3rd generation Japanese Canadian. My connection to the JCAM community dates back to early childhood when I took Japanese language classes. I remember them fondly in the old building! My first memory of volunteering was in 1993 and it gave me a great sense of pride and belonging. I worked as a food runner for Connie Matsuo every night during folklorama. It was a great experience and instilled in me a strong feeling of duty and service as modeled by those around me. Since then I’ve been involved in the centre and folklorama. In 1998 I began dancing with Aurora Odori, was an ambassador at Folklorama, entertainment co chair for Folklorama for several years, I was awarded the “Rising Star” volunteer award in 2014 and volunteered at numerous food events and sales. I was also coordinator of the Connecting Generations project. We held several workshops bringing community elders together to share their crafts and arts with the younger generations. Since fall 2023 I’ve been the teaching Kaede odori with Noriko Takahashi. The kids class has danced at Keirokai and Folklorama. We’ve also held workshops teaching dance at the kids club.
I think I could be a valuable member of the board helping to support JCAM to continue the good work it is doing and be a part of building its future.
I’m interested in Japanese food, festivals, dance and preserving JC history. I have made connections with newcomers as well and want to help them feel included and connected to the JCAM community.
