Secretary – Sarah Keating Sangalang
My name is Sarah Keating Sangalang, and I am looking forward to my term as Secretary to the JCAM Board.
I am yon-sei (4th Generation Japanese-Canadian). Growing up in Winnipeg, the Japanese Cultural Centre has always been a place for me to learn and maintain a personal connection with Japanese culture.
For the past 2 years I have served on the JCAM board as a director. During this time, I helped to develop the new Saturday kids club program, and was introduced to the planning committee for Bon Odori. Prior to my involvement on the Board, I have been involved with the JCAM community fund committee, Folklorama, and the Halloween and Christmas community events. Being a part of the community fund in particular, has taught me some of the history of JCAM, and the importance of programs that nourish the Japanese Canadian community in Manitoba.
In 2013, I graduated from Dentistry at the University of Manitoba, and have since been working as a General Dentist in Winnipeg. As a dentist, I have a passion for continued learning, connecting with people of all ages, and creating a comfortable and inviting environment.
My interests on the Board naturally turn toward children’s programs, as I am a mother of two toddlers, who are go-sei (5th Generation Japanese-Canadian) and have 1/4 Japanese heritage! Additionally my goals on the board are to increase community membership and involvement, as well as bridge the gap between Newcomers, Canadian-born Japanese, and those with a love for Japanese culture!
